Childhood notion shattered by Google maps

I remember being told that if we dug a very deep hole in the garden we would get to Australia. This belief now been shattered by the "Dig a hole through the Earth" feature of Google Maps! I positioned the green marker as instructed on where I used to live in Southern England and the hole appeared, not in Australia but over 1000Km southeast of Christchurch, New Zealand. This is almost 3100Km from Melbourne. Good thing my brother and I didn't get too far with our hole as it would have quickly filled up with water when approaching the destination!
